be left to your starboard.
1st RACE / FINISH LINE: The finish shall be made in the general N / NE
direction between the Bağlar front and a buoy or the finish boat,
placed in the general E / SE direction.

IN THIS COURSE, YACHTS WILL TURN LEAVING THE KARAADA TO THEIR PORT
SIDE.

made in the general N direction between the Siglik lighthouse (in
front of Harem Burnu) and a buoy or the finish boat, placed in the
general E direction.
5th RACE – ROUTE 1 –SHORT COURSE- FINISH LINE - 1 (5 NM): The finish
shall be made in the general E direction between Yassikaya Island in
southern extremity of Karaada and a buoy or the finish boat, placed in
the general S direction.
5th RACE – ROUTE 1 –SHORT COURSE- FINISH LINE - 2 (8 NM): The finish
shall be made in the general NW direction between Tavşan front and a
buoy or the finish boat, placed in the general SW direction.
B) ROUTE – 2 (12,5 NM):

4. BUOYS AT START AND FINISH LINES
These buoys will be spherical and yellow or orange in color. When a
buoy cannot be used, its place will be taken by the start and the
finish boats or boat/yacht displaying cod flag “M”.
5. RACE COMMITTEE BOATS
Start and finish boats of the race committee may have to hold
their places in the start or finish lines with the use of their
engines. Also boat/yacht which will be used instead of buoy,
displaying cod flag “M” may hold its position by using engine.
6. TIME LIMIT:
Each day's race shall finish not later than 18:00 hrs.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
INTRODUCTION
The Bodrum Cup is an annual yacht regatta organized by Era Bodrum
Sailing Club. The primary intention is to promote interest and skill
in sailing among the captains and crews of Bodrum's charter fleet of
boats built by the traditional solid-planking-on-frames method typical
in this classification are local gulets, tirhandils and flat stern (aynakiç)
boats. Yachts of wooden construction and built of other materials are
welcome to participate in other classes as defined further in these
instructions.
CHAPTER I – RACE ORGANIZATION, CATEGORIES, RULES, PRIZES
1. ORGANIZING AUTHORITY
The Bodrum Cup International Wooden Yacht Regatta is an annual regatta
organized by Era Bodrum Sailing Club, and a race which takes place in
the annual activity program of Turkish Sailing Federation.
1.1 The organizing authority shall publish a notice of race.
1.2 To enter the regatta, the yacht shall comply with the requirements
of the organizing authority.
1.3 The organizing authority or the race committee may reject or
cancel the entry of a yacht or exclude a competitor.
1.4 The organizing authority must appoint the race committee.
2. RACE COMMITTEE
The race committee is the committee appointed by the organizing
authority to be responsible for producing sailing instructions,
conducting the races and publishing the results.
2.1 The race committee is responsible for appointing a protest
committee to conduct hearing.
2.2 The race committee shall conduct races as directed by the
organising authority as required by the rules.
2.3 The race committee shall publish written sailing instructions.
2.4 Changes to the sailing instructions shall be in writing and posted
within the required time or on the water, communicated to each yacht
before the warning signal. Oral changes may be given only on the water.
Therefore all the yachts shall listen to the communications announced
by the race committee.
2.5 The race committee shall score a race or series as provided in
article 27 of this sailing instructions.
3. PROTEST COMMITTEE
3.1 The race committee appoints a protest committee between its
members to hear protests and request for redress.
3.2 The decision of the protest committee is the final.
4. RACE SECRETARIAT
The race secretariat is located in Era Bodrum Sailing Club until the
first day of the regatta (Neyzen Tevfik Street, no: 160/a Bodrum), and
will be established in the race committee start boat from then on.
5. RULES
The Bodrum Cup regatta will be governed by the following rules;
5.1 The prescriptions of the national authority, unless the sailing
instruction state that they don’t apply;
5.2 The notice of race;
5.3 The sailing instructions and its appendices
5.4 The international regulations for the preventing collisions at sea
(irpcas);
5.5 Any other documents that govern the event.
5.6 In case of a conflict among the above, the latest publish will
prevail
5.7 The organizing authority, race committee and protest committee
shall be governed by the rules in the conduct and judging of races.
6. RACE CLASSES AND CATEGORIES
6.1. Races will be made in the below mentioned classes and categories.
A) Traditional wooden sailing yachts: Wooden yachts of traditional
design of heavy displacement built with solid-planking-on-frames and
intended primarily for cruising purposes.
Category a 31.50 m. And over
Category b 26.50 m. – 31.49 m.
Category c 22.50 m. – 26.49 m.
Category d 18.50 m. – 22.49 m.
Category e 16.00 m. – 18.49 m.
Category f 12.00 m. – 15.99 m.
Category g 11.99 m and below
B) Classic wooden yachts: In general yachts known as classic in
international terminology (for example: Colin Archer, Swan etc.)
C) Yachts of modern wooden construction: Wooden sailing yachts of non-traditional,
contemporary design and construction, including hulls made of marine
plywood and other light construction materials, specifically for
racing purposes.
D) Guest yachts: All yachts of non-wooden construction that wish to
participate in the regatta. These yachts will race in the following
categories:
Category a: lod 15.99 meters and below
Category b: lod 16.00 meters and above
6.2. All the yachts in the above mentioned classes and categories will
continuously carry the class/ category flags, race numbers and race
flags which are provided by the organization committee and will be
available at the race secretariat.
7. UNIFICATION OF CATEGORIES AND/OR CANCELLATION
Although yachts shall be assigned to classes in accordance with the
declaration on the entry form, the organizing committee shall have the
right to re-assign the yachts to other classes/categories, to combine
or to eliminate classes and/or categories. The decision of the
organizing committee is final.
8. REGISTRATIONS
8.1. Eligible yachts shall register by completing registration with
the organizing authority, Era Bodrum Sailing Club, no later than
Friday, 17:00 hrs. (2 days before the first race).
8.2. Participants should pay the entry fee before the registration.
8.3. Registrations until 12:00 hrs of the day before the first race
will be accepted upon payment of double entry fee.
8.4. The organizing committee shall provide 2 (two) numbered panels
for each yacht. These panels shall be attached to the port and
starboard shrouds and be carried visible externally during the regatta.
8.5. ACCURACY OF THE INFORMATION ON THE ENTRY FORM
The information on the entry form, filled in by the yacht owner or
skipper, will be considered as true. Classification and categorization
will be made according to this information. At the end of each race,
some yachts may be inspected (especially the prize winning yachts) by
the race committee and in case of a conflict between the inspector and
the information on the entry form; the yacht shall be disqualified
without a hearing.
9. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
9.1. Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own
risk. Era Bodrum Sailing Club, its representatives, members of the
organization and race committees and sponsors shall not accept any
liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in
conjunction with or prior to, during or after the regatta.
9.2. RESPONSIBILITIES OF YACHT OWNERS
A) Yacht owners and/or their designated representatives are
responsible for safety at sea, seaworthiness of the yacht, and
compliance with sailing instructions and applicable rules and
decisions to start or to abandon the race.
B) By participating in the regatta they waive their rights to outside
judicial recourse in case of penalties imposed under the rules of this
regatta.
C) Assuming these responsibilities, they draw attention of their crew
before the start of every race.
D) They claim that they assume all these responsibilities by signing
the entry form.
10. MEASUREMENTS AND INSPECTIONS
The race committee may, at any time, before, during or after the race,
measure or inspect the yachts to verify compliance with the rules.
Violations may be subject to disqualification without a hearing.
11. DECLARATION
Every yacht has to identify herself (by indicating her name and race
number) to the finish boat on vhf, when crossing the finish line. The
yachts that could not be identified by the finish boat will be
recorded, did not finish the race (dnf).
12. PROTESTS
12.1 Protests, if any, will be submitted in writing to the protest
committee not later than two hours after the end of the race.
12.2. The protest will contain all details including time, place, rule
broken, position of yachts and names of witnesses.
12.3. A protest fee of 50 usd, as determined by the organising
committee will be deposited at the time of submission. This fee will
be forfeited to the organizing committee if this protest claim is
rejected.
12.4. The yacht that intends to lodge a protest will notify the
protested yacht by voice or vhf at the earliest opportunity and will
notify the finish boat via vhf when crossing the finish line.
12.5. Yachts that have a reason to believe that their finishing
positions have been improperly recorded, without any fault of their
own, may request that the race committee review their cases. Such
requests for review of the finishing positions shall not require the
payment of protest deposits.
12.6. Decisions of the protest committee are final and not subject to
appeal.
13. RETIREMENT FROM THE RACE
If a yacht is retired from the race, she will lower the class /
category flags given, and will notify the race committee on the vhf
channel 09, at her first convenience.
14. RADIO COMMUNICATIONS
The regatta channel is vhf channel 09. Proper radio procedures must be
observed.
All announcements will be made on this channel; failure to hear will
not be grounds for protest.
15. LIMITATIONS ON CREW
There is no limitation on the crew of racing yachts.
16. PUBLICITY/ADVERTISEMENTS ON YACHTS:
All the advertisements on the yacht’s sails, broadsides and masts
require permission from the organisation committee and are subject to
fees. Advertisements of the companies which run activities in the same
field of main sponsor are definitely unacceptable. Yachts which do not
declare their advertisements beforehand and pay their fees will be
disqualified from the race and can not take place in any activity of
the Bodrum Cup, even as spectators.
17. COMMITTEE BOATS
17.1. Committee boats will be placed at the start and the finish lines,
and make the necessary controls during the race, moving along the
fleet. Race committee’s controls concerning the direction of the race
will be maintained from the committee boat that is assigned at the
start line.
17.2. Assigned yachts and other yachts of the race committee will be
carrying the R (Romeo) code flag.
17.3. Absence of this flag will not be grounds for protest.
17.4. Race committee boats assigned on the start and the finish lines
may hold their positions by the power of engine.
17.5. All the yachts in the organization and race committee will try
not to interfere in the racing boats.
18. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Changes to sailing instructions shall be made not later than 1 (one)
hour before start. Changes to the regatta program shall be made not
later than by 20:00 hrs.before the day it will take effect.
18. RACE SIGNALS
Races shall be started by using the visual and sound signals from the
race committee boat at the starboard end of the starting line.
19. STARTING PRECEDURE
19.1. 15 minutes before the start, the race committee shall display a
red flag with three sound signals.
19.2. 10 minutes before the start, the race committee shall display a
green flag with two sound signals.
19.3. 5 minutes before the start, the race committee shall display the
international cod flag ''P'' (Papa) with one sound signal.
At this stage all yachts are required to stop their engines. Otherwise
they will be disqualified from that race.
19.4. The start will be given by lowering all the hoisted flags
accompanied by one sound signal.
19.5. If a yacht makes contact with the race committee boat at the
starting line or the start buoy, a time penalty (30 minutes) will be
added to the yacht's finishing time or the protest committee may
impose another penalty after a hearing.
19.5. Any yacht that does not cross the starting line within 30 (thirty)
minutes after the starting signal is given she shall be scored as ''did
not start'' (DNS) for this race.
20. STARTING PENALTIES
When at a yacht’s starting signal any part of her hull, crew or
equipment is on the course side of the starting line, she will sail
completely to the pre-start side of the line before starting or she
will be given a time penalty by the protest committee.
20.1 If the race committee identifys a yacht over the line at the
starting signal, the race committee shall display flag 'X' (X-ray)
with one sound signal and try to inform this yacht/yachts by vhf. The
flag will remain hoisted for thirty minutes to allow OCS yachts to
renew their start.
20.2. When returning to the pre-start side of the line, the yacht
shall not force the other yachts to alter their courses.
20.3 If a yacht doesn’t exonarete herself by not to restart, she will
be subject to a time penalty or be scored as disqualify from this race
by the protest committee.
21. GENERAL RECALL
When at the starting signal the race committee is unable to identfy
yachts that are on the course side of the starting line or there has
been an error in the starting precedure, the race committee may signal
a GENERAL RECALL (display the first substitute with two sounds). The
warning signal for a new start shall be made one minute after the
first substitude is removed (one sound).
22. SHORTENING THE COURSE
22.1. If the race committee decides that the relevant condition is not
suitable to finish the race within the time limit, she may decide to
apply shortened course by displaying the code flag “S” (Sierra) with
two sound signals at least 15 minutes before the starting time.
22.2. The race committee may also shorten the course when racing. In
this case the RC finish boat will be placed at the required side of an
exact point on the course and establish the finish line by displaying
code flag “S”, blue and orange flags.
22.3 These decisions will be announced all participating yachts by vhf.
23. POSTPONE THE RACE
A postponed race is delayed before its scheduled start but may be
restarted or abandoned later.
23.1 if the race committee decides to postpone the race she will
display “AP” (Answering Pennant) with two sound signals. New start
procedures will begin one minute after this flag is lowered.
23.2 if the race committee decides to postpone the race to the later
day she will display “AP” and cod flag “A” (Alfa) together with two
sounds.
24. ABANDON THE RACE
A race that the race committee or protest committee abandons is void
but may be resailed.
24.1 after the starting signal, the race committee may abandon the
race by displaying cod flag “N” (November) with three sound signals.
The new starting procedures will begin one minute later after the flag
is lowered.
24.2 If the race committee displays flags “N” and “A” together this
will mean “the race is abandoned, no more race today”.
24.3 The reasons of abandoning the race;
a) Because of an error in the starting precedure,
b) Because of foul weather,
c) Because of insufficient wind making it unlikely that any boat will
finish within the time limit,
d) Because a mark is missing or out of position or,
e) For any other reason directly effecting the safety or fairness of
the competition.
25. FINISH AND EXTENSION OF THE FINISHING TIME LIMIT
25.1. If the race committee evaluates that it is not possible to
finish the race within the time limit she may extend this limit up to
a reasonable time. The yachts are not entitled to claim about this
decision. If the race committee decides to lenghten the finishing time
limit, she will announce this decision within the two hours after the
starting time by vhf.
25.2. The finishing boat at the finishing line will be displaying a
“blue” flag and an “orange” flag.
The yachts are very close to the finishing line (when they are about
to finish-not before) must identfy themselves saying their name and
race numbers by using vhf channel 09. The yachts failing to do so may
be scored as not finish (DNF-did not finish).
25.3. If a yacht contacts a buoy or finishing boat when finishing she
will be given a time penalty or be disqualified by the protest
committee from this race.
26. RESTRICTIONS
26.1. The yachts shall carry the event sponsor’s advertisement when
required. Other advertisements will be subject to the restrictions of
the organising authority.
26.2. Yachts may use their engines only in danger in order to avoid
collisions. This is their responsibility to prove to the protest
committee; unacceptable proof will result in a minimum 30 minutes
penalty or disqualification from the race.
27. SCORING
27.1 Each yachts series score shall be the total of her race scores
excluding her worse score. If five races are completed one (worst)
score will be excluded.
27.2 The yacht with the lowest series score wins and others shall be
ranked accordingly.
27.3 Each yacht starting and finishing and not thereafter retiring,
being penalized or given redress shall be scored points as follows;

27.4 A yacht that did not start, did not finish, retired after
finishing or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing
place one more than the number of yachts entered in the series.
27.5 If a yacht is disqualified from a race or retires after finishing,
each yacht that finished after her shall be moved up one place.

28. PRIZES
Prizes consist of class/category prizes, overall regatta prizes,
course prizes and special prizes.
28.1. CLASS/CATEGORY PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded to first three yachts of each class/category.
First, second and third prizes will be awarded within each category
provided that at least five yachts are registered in that category.
First and second prizes will be awarded in those classifications/categories
which four yachts registered in. First prize only will be awarded in
those classifications/categories which three yachts registered in.
28.2. OVERALL PRIZES
28.2.1. WOODEN YACHTS TRADITIONAL DESIGN OVERALL PRIZES
28.2.1.1THE BODRUM CUP
The highest award is the BODRUM CUP, presented to the yacht with the
least penalty points among all yachts competing in all the categories
of the traditional yacht classification.
28.2.1.2. THE BODRUM CUP REGATTA PENNANT
The Bodrum Cup Regatta Pennant is awarded to the winner of the Bodrum
Cup. The yacht winning the Bodrum Cup three times is awarded the
permanent possession of the pennant.
28.2.1.3. ORTAKENT MUNICIPALITY PRIZE
Awarded to the second yacht in all the categories of the traditional
yacht classification.
28.2.1.4. BITEZ MUNICIPALITY PRIZE
Awarded to the third yacht in all the categories of the traditional
yacht classification.
28.2.2. WOODEN YACHTS TRADITIONAL DESIGN – WOODEN YACHTS CLASSIC
DESIGN OVERALL PRIZES
28.2.2.1. MEDITERRANEAN SAILING UNION TROPHY
This trophy will be awarded by the Mediterranean Sailing Union to the
yacht with least penalty points among all of the participating yachts,
except for guest yachts.
28.2.3. WOODEN YACHTS TRADITIONAL DESIGN – WOODEN YACHTS CLASSIC
DESIGN – NON-WOODEN YACHTS OVERALL PRIZES
28.2.3.1. BODRUM MUNICIPALITY PRIZE
Will be awarded to the yacht with the least penalty points among all
yachts in all categories in all classifications eligible for
competition.
28.2.4. TRADITIONAL YACHTS STANDARD SAIL PRIZES
Will be awarded to the traditional yachts which only use the existing
sails and not special racing sails like light genova. In all the
categories of the traditional design classification the first prize
goes to the yacht with the least penalty points; second and third

28.2.4.1. FISHERMAN OF HALIKARNAS PRIZE
This is the special prize of Bodrum Municipality presented to the
first yacht with the least penalty points among traditional yachts
with standard sails described in item 28.2.4.
28.2.4.2. TURGUTREIS MUNICIPALITY PRIZE
This prize is presented to the second yacht among traditional yachts
with standard sails described in item 28.2.4.
28.2.4.3. YALI MUNICIPALITY PRIZE
This prize is presented to the third yacht among traditional yachts
with standard sails described in item 28.2.4.
28.2.5. GAFF RIGGED YACHTS OVERALL PRIZES
First, second and third prizes will be awarded to yachts having this
type of rigging competing in all the categories of the traditional
design classification. The first prize goes to the yacht with the
least penalty points; second and third prizes go to yachts in the
ascending order of penalty points. However, yachts of tirhandil hull
design are not eligible for these prizes.
28.2.5.1. CHAMBER OF SHIPPING PRIZE
This prize is presented to the first yacht with the least penalty
points among gaff rigged yachts described in item 28.2.5.
28.2.5.2. GUMUSLUK MUNICIPALITY PRIZE
This prize is presented to the second yacht among gaff rigged yachts
described in item 28.2.5.
28.3. COURSE PRIZES
28.3.1. TURGUTREIS COURSE
28.3.1.1. TURGUTREIS MUNICIPALITY COURSE PRIZES
Presented to the first finishing yachts of each category in Turgutreis
course.
28.3.1.2. ENGIN ŞENOL PRIZES
These prizes are presented to the first three finishing yachts in
orange flag group of traditional yachts in Turgutreis course in the
memory of Engin Şenol, who had made contributions to the Bodrum cup
and passed away recently.
28.3.2. YALIKAVAK COURSE
28.3.2.1. YALIKAVAK MUNICIPALITY COURSE PRIZES
Presented to the first finishing yachts of each category in Yalikavak
course.
28.3.3. BİTEZ COURSE

Presented to the first finishing yachts of each category in Bitez
course.
28.4. SPECIAL PRIZES
28.4.1. TIRHANDIL PRIZES
In each category in which at least two yachts of this design start in
at least 3 legs of the regatta will be awarded to the yacht of with
the least penalty points.
28.4.2. D-MARIN TURGUTREIS PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded to the first yachts in each category of
traditional wooden yachts, and the first of classic yachts. Winners
will have the opportunity to anchor free of charge in D-marin
Turgutreis for 180 days between 01 November 2004 and 01 May 2005.
28.4.3. 10-YEAR PARTICIPATION PRIZE
This prize will be awarded to all yachts that this year completes 10
years of participation in the bodrum cup regatta.
28.4.5. SHIPWRIGHT’S PRIZE
A prize will be awarded to every shipwright responsible for the
construction of those yachts that place first in their categories.
28.4.6. THE YOUNGEST & SENIOR PARTICIPANT PRIZES
These prizes will be given to the youngest child and the senior person
who takes part in the regatta.
28.4.7. THE BEST DRESSED TEAM & THE FANCIEST DRESSED TEAM PRIZES
A special jury appointed by the organization committee will select the
most successful teams of each category.
28.4.8. THE BODRUM CUP 2004 PHOTOGRAPH CONTEST
In accordance with the application form, the photos that are chosen by
the jury will be displayed on the bodrum cup official website. The
photos will be voted by visitors, and the first three will we awarded.
Dates for application, display and voting will be declared on the
application form.
29. THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSION OF THESE RULES IS A SUMMARY. IN
CASE OF MISUNDERSTANDING AND OR DISPUTE THE TURKISH COMPLETE VERSION
IS BINDING.
CHAPTER II - THE OTHER RULES
A - FUNDAMENTAL RULES
1. SPORTMANSHIP AND THE RULES – Competitors in the sport of sailing
are governed by the body of rules that they are expected to follow and
enforce. A fundamental principle of sportmanship is that when
competitors break a rule they will promptly take a penalty or accept
the penalty or retire.
2. HELPING THOSE IN DANGER– A yacht or competitor shall give all
possible help to any person or yacht in danger.
3. LIFE SAVING EQUIPMENT AND PERSONAL BUOYANCY – A yacht shall carry
edequate life saving equipment for all person on board. Each
competitor is individually responsible for wearing personal buoyancy
edequate for the conditions.
4. FAIR SAILING – A yacht and her owner shall compete in compliance
with recognized principles of sportmanship and fair play. A
disqualification under this rule shall not be excluded from yacht’s
series score.
5. DECISION TO RACE – The responsibility for a yacht’s decision to
participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.
B – WHEN YACHTS MEET
This rules apply yachts that are sailing in or near the racing area
and intend to race, racing or have been racing. The international
Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea (IRPCAS) or government
right-of-way rules apply between a yacht saing under these rules and a
vessel that is not and they replace these rules it sailing
instructions so state.
1. RIGHT OF WAY – A yacht has right of way when another yacht is
required to keep clear of her.
1.1 ON OPPOSITE TACKS – When yachts are on opposite tacks, a port tack
yacht shall keep clear of a starboard tack yacht.
1.2 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED – When yachts are on the same tack
and overlapped, a windward yacht shall keep clear of a leeward yacht.
1.3 ON THE SAME TACK, NOT OVERLAPPED - When yachts are on the same
tack and not overlapped, a yacht clear astern shall keep clear of a
yacht clear ahead.
1.4 WHILE TACKING – After a yacht passes head to wind, she shall keep
clear of other yachts until she is on a close-houled course. If two
yachts are subject to this rule at the same time, the one on the
other’s port side shall keep clear.
2. GENERAL LIMITATIONS
2.1 AVOIDING CONTACT – Every yacht shall pay attention to avoid
contact. The right-of-way yacht shall not be penalized unless there is
contact that causes damage.
2.2 ACQUIRING RIGHT OF WAY – When a yacht acquires right of way, she
shall initially give the other yacht room to keep clear, unless she
acquires right of way because of the othet yacht’s actions.
2.3 CHANGING COURSE – When a right of way yacht changes course, she
shall give the other yacht room to keep clear.
3. ROUNDING AND PASSING MARKS AND OBSTRUCTIONS
3.1 Room is room for inside yacht to round or pass between an outside
yacht and a mark or obstruction, including room to tack or gybe when
either is a normal part of the manoeuvre.
3.2 When yachts are within the two yachts length distance from the
mark or obstruction the inside yacht has right of way to round or pass
it. Outside yacht shall keep cleer.
4. STARTING ERRORS, MOVING ASTERN
4.1 A yacht sailing towards the pre-start side of the starting line or
its extensions shall keep clear of a yacht not doing so until she is
completely on the pre-start side.
4.2 A yacht moving astern shall keep clear of one that is not.
